Split Cooling Systems

A Split cooling system is when one part of the system is separate from the other part.

Traditional Central HVAC

With traditional central Heating and Air conditioning, with either a split or packaged system, the air flows through duct work, and then comes back through a centralized (in most cases) return system to be cooled again then redistributes that cooled air back through the duct system.

Mini Split / Ductless Systems Explained

  1. Indoor Unit(s): The indoor unit of a mini ductless system is mounted on a wall, ceiling, or floor within the room or zone that requires cooling or heating. It contains a fan and evaporator coil that cools or heats the air. The indoor units are sleek and compact, designed to blend with the room's aesthetics.
  2. Outdoor Unit: The outdoor unit houses the compressor, condenser, and other components responsible for transferring heat or cool air. It is typically installed on the exterior of the building, providing a connection to the indoor units via refrigerant lines and electrical wiring.
  3. Refrigerant Lines: Refrigerant lines connect the indoor and outdoor units, circulating the refrigerant that absorbs heat from the indoor space and releases it outside during cooling mode or extracts heat from the outside and brings it indoors during heating mode.
  4. Zone Control: One of the significant advantages of mini ductless systems is their ability to provide zone control. Each indoor unit is controlled independently, allowing different rooms or zones within a building to have individual temperature settings. This enables personalized comfort and energy efficiency, as you can cool or heat only the areas that are occupied.
  5. Ductless Operation: As the name suggests, mini ductless systems do not require traditional ductwork. This makes them ideal for retrofitting older buildings or spaces without existing ducts. It eliminates the energy losses associated with ductwork and provides more flexibility in terms of system installation.
  6. Energy Efficiency: Mini ductless systems are known for their energy efficiency. The ability to cool or heat individual zones allows for precise temperature control, avoiding the energy waste associated with cooling or heating unused spaces. Additionally, many mini ductless systems are equipped with energy-saving features such as programmable timers and smart controls.
  7. Quiet Operation: Mini ductless systems are designed for quiet operation, ensuring minimal noise disruption within the living or working environment. The indoor units are equipped with advanced technology to reduce noise levels, providing a comfortable and peaceful indoor environment.

Mini ductless systems are commonly used in residential homes, apartments, commercial spaces, hotels, offices, and other applications where individual temperature control is desired. They offer a versatile and efficient cooling and heating solution, providing comfort while minimizing energy consumption and installation complexities associated with traditional ducted systems.

Why is it called a "Mini Split"

The term "mini-split" refers to the type of air conditioning system that consists of two main components: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit.

The "mini" part of the name refers to the smaller size of these units compared to traditional central air conditioning systems.

Unlike central air conditioning systems that use ductwork to distribute cooled air throughout a building, mini-split systems are ductless. This means that they don't require extensive ductwork installation, making them a more flexible and efficient option, especially for retrofitting older buildings or spaces where ductwork is not feasible.

The indoor unit of a mini-split system is typically mounted on a wall or ceiling and is responsible for delivering cooled air into the room. The outdoor unit houses the compressor and other components and is located outside the building.

The two units are connected by refrigerant lines and electrical wiring.

The term "split" comes from the fact that the system is split into these two components, with the indoor and outdoor units working together to cool the space. This design allows for more precise control over individual zones or rooms, as each indoor unit can be independently controlled, providing customized comfort and energy efficiency.

Overall, the name "mini-split" highlights the compact size and split configuration of these systems compared to traditional central air conditioning setups, making them a popular choice for cooling individual rooms or specific zones within a building.
